CD44抗原は、hyaladherin 結合タンパク質であるhyaladherin ファミリーに属する膜貫通糖タンパク質です。多数のアイソフォームが報告されていますが、85 kDaのCD44Sが主要なアイソフォームです。CD44は、ほとんどの細胞／組織で発現しますが、血小板、肝細胞、心筋、腎尿細管上皮、精巣、皮膚には発現していません。ヒト血液型抗原Ina/bはCD44に存在します。
