CD117抗原は、145kDaのがん原遺伝子c-kitで、クラスIIIレセプタ型チロシンキナーゼ・ファミリーに属します。この抗原は、steel遺伝子座（Steel Locus Factor： SLF）によってコードされるStem-Cell Factor（SCF）のレセプタです。CD117抗原は、ごく少数の正常骨髄細胞にしか発現していません。ほとんどのCD117陽性骨髄細胞はCD34を共発現します。CD117は肥満細胞にも発現しています。
